About the book

How ordinary citizens turn into executioners.

In 1942, Reserve Police Battalion 101—a unit of middle-aged German men from Hamburg who were largely unsuited for frontline military combat—arrived in the Polish village of Józefów. Commanded by Major Wilhelm Trapp, these men were given an unthinkable order: to round up and execute thousands of Jewish civilians.

Christopher R. Browning investigates post-war judicial interrogations of these battalion members to examine the psychological mechanisms behind mass atrocities. Rather than depicting monsters, the book reveals how peer pressure, careerism, conformity, and ideological conditioning can drive ordinary human beings to commit unspeakable acts.

Somber historical tones reflecting the solemn psychological weight of the Holocaust.

A few things that make the book even more intriguing.

01

Not ideological fanatics.

The men in Battalion 101 were largely working-class and middle-aged individuals from Hamburg who had not been part of the Nazi party elite or indoctrinated stormtroopers.

02

The option to step out.

Before the first mass shooting, Major Trapp offered older battalion members who felt uncomfortable the chance to step out of the execution detail—and remarkably, few chose to do so due to peer pressure.

03

Based on secret court records.

Browning built his investigation upon thousands of pages of post-war testimony gathered during West German judicial interrogations of former battalion members in the 1960s.

04

A timeless psychological warning.

The book challenges comforting assumptions about evil by demonstrating that normal people can easily conform to systemic brutality under peer pressure and authority.
