About the book

A killer without a name.

For decades, a mysterious offender terrorized communities across California, committing a series of attacks and murders before seemingly disappearing. Years later, writer Michelle McNamara became obsessed with the case and began tracing scattered clues, police records, survivor accounts, and the work of investigators who had never stopped looking.

McNamara's investigation moves between the original crimes and the modern search for the person responsible. Her work helped bring renewed attention to the case while exploring the human cost of unsolved violence and the persistence of those who refuse to let forgotten victims disappear from memory.

Legacy

More than a book about a killer.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark became a story about much more than identifying a serial offender. It brought attention to victims whose stories had remained connected to an unresolved investigation for decades, while also documenting the personal obsession of a writer determined to understand what had happened. McNamara's work helped turn an old cold case into a contemporary investigation that ultimately reached its conclusion.
