Why we read
The best books don't simply give us another story. They make us question what we thought we knew, understand people we may never meet and look twice at the world around us.

Kodama is an independent project built around books, stories, investigations and the strange feeling that some pages stay with us long after we close the cover.
Some stories end when the book closes. Others follow you home.
There are more books being published than any reader could ever hope to discover. Beneath the noise, however, there are stories that deserve more than a passing glance.
Stories about real people. Investigations that changed what we thought we knew. Crimes that remained unsolved. Psychological portraits, historical accounts, mysteries and books that somehow manage to stay in our minds long after the final page.
Kodama was created as a place to slow that discovery down.
Kodama is not intended to be just another catalogue of books.
The idea is to create an editorial space where curiosity can lead somewhere unexpected — from a book to a case, from a case to a person, from a person to a piece of history, and sometimes back to a book.
Every title in the archive is an invitation to look closer.
Kodama is an independent project. There is no large publishing house behind the archive and no newsroom funding its stories.
The site is built, researched and maintained with the goal of bringing new books, stories and discoveries to the archive every month.
When you choose to purchase a book through an Amazon link on Kodama, we may receive a small commission from the retailer. It does not cost you anything extra, but that support helps us maintain the site, research new stories and continue bringing more content to the archive.
Reading matters.
Exploring the archive matters. Discovering an author you had never heard of matters. Spending a few minutes with an investigation, following a story to its final detail, or simply returning to Kodama when you are looking for something worth reading — all of it matters.
A purchase can help keep the project running, but curiosity is what keeps it alive.
Take your time.
There is always another story.
Beyond the bookshelf
Sometimes the most fascinating part isn't the crime itself. It's everything that came after: the investigation, the unanswered questions, the people left behind and the details history forgot.
The psychology of reading
Curiosity is one of the strongest forces behind a great story. We want answers, but we also want to understand people, motives and the moments that changed everything.
That's why the most memorable books don't simply tell us what happened. They make us wonder what we would have done if we had been there.
